Long Description
This prodigious collection of sacred Gnostic texts came to light in the late 1940s when the treatises--concealed for sixteen centuries--were discovered in Chenoboskian, a remote hamlet of Upper Egypt. Among them was The Gospel According to Thomas.
The Secret Books of the Egyptian Gnostics, tells the full story of that discovery. It is the first complete survey of the documents and their contents and the first full-scale appraisal of their significance to scholars and the world at large.
Believed by many scholars to surpass the Dead Sea Scrolls in importance, these Gnostic texts throw new and startling light on the vanished world in which Christianity was born and bred. Hidden for nearly two millennia, these sacred teachings are as vital for our time as they were at the time of their writing.
