"In the case of humans, structure and functuion are meaningless, one without the other; so that when (Ida Rolf) integrates structure, as nobody else can, (she) improves functioning."

HOLISTIC HEALTH / BODYWORK

“. . . when Ida Rolf integrates structure, as nobody else can, she improves functioning. . . . Rolfing was a revealing and unforgettable experience for me.”
--Moshe Feldenkrais

The original and classic text on Rolfing, Ida Rolf’s seminal work first appeared to great critical acclaim in 1977. More than ten years later, with translations in eight languages and Rolfing classes taught worldwide, this book remains the most important reference available for Rolfing students and practitioners. It is also widely used by healing arts practitioners throughout the field of bodywork.

A system of structural integration developed by Dr. Rolf, Rolfing aligns and balances the physical body within its gravitational field. This rebalancing is accomplished through systematic manipulation that loosens and reorganizes the myofascia, or connective tissue, that surrounds the muscles. After a Rolfing session, you not only stand taller, look better, and move with greater ease, but also have more vitality and an enhanced sense of psychological well-being.

IDA P. ROLF (1896-1979) received her Ph.D. in biochemistry and physiology from Columbia University in 1920. She subsequently worked at the Rockefeller institute in the departments of chemotherapy and organic chemistry. She came upon the idea of Rolfing, or structural Integration, during her search for solutions to family health problems. Finding available methods inadequate, she investigated the effect of structure on function. For more than four decades, Dr. Rolf taught classes in Rolfing worldwide, and in 1972 she established The Rolf Institute in Boulder, Colorado. By the time of her death in 1979 Rolfing centers were emerging in Europe, South America, and Australia.

Dr. Rolf’s book is intended for the interested but untrained layperson as well as the professional in need of specific technical information. Six hundred drawings and photographs illustrate Dr. Rolf’s uniquely workable and logical view of human structure--a view that has helped tens of thousands worldwide attain healthier and more balanced lives.
