Healing through Sound

A warm and wise self-portrait of the woman who originated the therapy that bears her name. Here, Ida Rolf tells about her life, about the wonder of the human body, about life in general, and about Rolfing in particular, explaining her technique of manipulating muscle tissue to allow the body to come into its correct alignment.

After Rolfing, your body has been encouraged to do what it wants to do--you move with ease, your lungs take in more air, and you are taller (and therefore, slimmer).

HEALTH / BODYWORK

“. . .when Ida Rolf integrates structure, as nobody else can, she improves functioning. . . .Rolfing was a revealing and unforgettable experience for me.”
--Moshe Feldenkrais

What are the forces that disturb the body’s natural alignment and establish conditions of chronic pain and dysfunction? It was this question that led Dr. Ida Rolf on her lifelong search for a means to undo the ill effects of time and injury (both physical and emotional) on the body’s structure. The result was Rolfing, an organized pattern of bodywork that has freed millions to live healthier, more active lives.

In this book of lucid, informal talks, the woman behind the method speaks out about her experiences, her theories, and the therapy she developed of deep muscular/connective tissue manipulation. Ida P. Rolf (1896-1970) received her Ph. D. in biochemistry from Columbia University in 1920. She subsequently worked at the Rockefeller Institute in the department of organic chemistry. She came upon the idea of Rolfing, or Structural Integration, during her search for solutions to family health problems. Finding available methods of treatment inadequate, she began drawing on her extensive knowledge of hatha-yoga to investigate the effect of structure on function. For more than four decades, Dr. Rolf taught classes in Rolfing worldwide, and in 1972 she established The Rolf Institute in Boulder, Colorado. By the time of her death, Rolfing centers were emerging in Europe, South America, and Australia.

This intimate yet down-to-earth book provides a vivid impression of a warm, funny, and wise woman, and a reassuring picture of Rolfing: it is not a matter of coercing the body into submission; rather the body is encouraged to do what it really wants to do - work with, not against gravity.
